Brompton Dock at Southampton Central Station

If you are a commuter and usually take the train to work, you must have seen these Brompton foldable bike docks at the train station, right? If you haven’t noticed them, perhaps you’ve seen people going to and from the stations on some funny-looking bikes?

Anyway, if you are bicycle fan like me and would like to try out one of these bikes, why not hire one for the day? The price starts at £2.50!

IMG_20160315_131157

Bike hire dock at train station

All you have to do is register online (click here), find the nearest dock to you and book one 😉 Also, you don’t have to return the bicycle to the dock of origin. You can return it to any dock! It’s kind of similar to the Boris bikes in London (click here) but the advantage is that with these foldable ones you can take them to work, home or on the train. They don’t take up much space.

Don’t you think it’s a great way to keep fit? If you have already tried it, feel free to leave a message below as it would be great to hear about your experience 😉

IMG_20150920_124045

(Versao em Portugues no final da pagina)

So, if you’ve been reading my blog you probably know that I registered to take part in my first cycling event, the Cycletta. I thought it would be a nice opportunity as cycling is a new hobby for me and so far I love it! Also, it was a charity event and I managed to raise £80 for Bloodwise!

First things first. There were 4 different routes to choose from: 20km, 50km, 100km and 150km. I thought to myself: “since I’ve been covering nearly 20km at the weekends I might as well challenge myself and go for the 50km one”. Simples!

I hard in mind that it would take me nearly 4 hours to complete the route based on my previous cycle rides and I was ok with that.

The event IMG_20150920_072948took place in Beaulieu  in the New Forest and I went there all by myself. First challenge was how to put the bike in the car – which I managed without much hassle. Go Nissan Leaf haha

IMG_20150920_074642

Mooo!

Another challenge was to drive through the forest in thick mist with cows and ponies crossing the roads without notice (Moooooo!).

So, once I got there I noticed that 87,3% of the ladies had state of the art bicycles and gear (from attire to GPS, watches and the works). I was one of the fewest with a mountain bike and an Adidas rucksack (I had to carry all my stuff, didn’t I?).

Anyway, I was in awe of the ladies, who looked much older than me, going for 100km or 150km! I felt I was doing a massive distance but what did I know?

I decided not to think about the others and to focus on myself and my aim was to complete the circuit in less than 4 hours. How did it feel? P-A-I-N-F-U-L!

posh bikes

The first half hour for me was the worst (and it’s usually the same with any kind of exercise I do). I could not cycle uphill 5 minutes after the race had started! I simply got off the bike and pushed it. Boy wasn’t that embarrassing… (I definitely need to work on hills, but how?).

To cut a long story short: I was able to complete the race successfully in 3 hours 23 min! I was chuffed to bits! I’m not a fast cyclist but I think I’ve got good endurance. And to think that I had not trained for over 2 weeks before the race makes it even more of an accomplishment.

Will I do that again? Watch this space!

Haviam 4 rotas diferentes a escolher: 20km, 50km, 100km e 150km.

D-O-L-O-R-O-SO!

Eu nao consegui fazer a primeira ladeira 5 minutos apos a largada!

Farei outra vez? Fiquem atentos!

Eventos beneficentes

Ola pessoal! Hi guys!

(English Version at the end of the page)

1900300_10203122678965798_1019583358_o

Na minha primeira corrida oficial rsrsrs (1 milha)

Ja no meu segundo evento, fui mais ousada (rs). Corri 5km e era o evento Race for Life (so para mulheres, todas vestindo rosa). Confiram as fotos abaixo:

Meu novo desafioo agora eh o ciclismo (cycletta)!

English Version:

I’ve decided to write a bit about something quite common here in England: the charity events. Everywhere you go there’s a charity shop here and all the money goes to institutions such as: Marie Curie, British Red Cross, British Heart Foundation etc. But charity shops require their own post (watch this space haha).

The charity events I’m referring to are: swimming, running, walking and cycling (of course there are other types of charity but these are the ones I’m familiar with).

What I like about these events is that they encourage you to be more active and to look after your health and at the same time you do your best to get sponsors to help you raise money.

This is how it works:

  • First you register to take part in an event (for instance, my very first one was a 1-mile run – I was a beginner) for Sport Relief.
  • From the moment you register to the day of the event you do your best to get as many sponsors as possible so that you can reach your target (I managed to get £80 sponsorship on my first run and it went straight into medical research).
  • You get to know lots of cool people who are also participating in these events and you even get a medal when you finish your race.

My second event I ran 5k (I was more daring haha). It was a women-only Race for Life run (all wearing pink). The options were 5 or 10k. Once more, all the money raised was for cancer research. You can check the photos of Race for Life above.

My new challenge now is cycling (cycletta)! I’m taking part in a cycling event where you can choose between 20k, 50k, 80l, 100k or 150k. Since it’s my very first cycling event I decided to push myself and go for the 50k one which will take place on 20th September (wish me luck!).

Check out my JustGiving page. This time, all the money I raise will go towards Leukemia and Lymphoma research.

England’s countryside

(Versao em Portugues no final da pagina)

As an expat, many people think I live in London just because I happen to be in England. Nope, I do not live in London. I live 102 miles away from Big Ben, in the New Forest (southern England).

Gordleton2

Due to the amazing landscape where I live, I often go cycling around the neighbourhood and today was no different. I got home from work, put my cycling gear on and off I went for a quick ride for approximately half an hour (it was a quickie lol).

Anyway, I wanted to share the pictures I took of this amazing part of the country. I even manage to make a short video too.

Happy Monday!

Enjoy x

Moro a 163 km do Big Ben, numa area chamada The New Forest (A Nova Floresta, que fica no sul da Inglaterra).

Feliz Segunda-feira!

Aproveitem!

Happy Monday!

Enjoy x

Cycling in the New Forest: Burley

(Portuguese version at the end of the page)

11061960_10207086735504734_5897461791186940056_o

Today I decided to cycle to a village called Burley which is 9 miles from where I live.

The ride through the forest is quite pleasant and most cars respect cyclists.

Burley is a tiny village with lots of little shops and one cycle hire. So why not hop on a bus (or even drive there) and explore Burley and its surroundings by bicycle? It’s a great way to get some fresh air and to keep fit.

Burley

Burley is famous for being a “witches’ retreat” and many shops are witch-themed. The Queen’s Head pub was built in the 16th century and was notorious for smugglers (photo below).

11119658_10207086721144375_4585923220870081575_o  Burley is easily located in the heart of the New Forest, with great access from the A31 and A35. If you are using Sat Nav set your destination as BH24 4AB to head for the village centre.

Thanx for reading 😉

(foto do pub acima).

Cycling to Keyhaven

I took up cycling as a hobby and I’ve been cycling nearly every day – weather allowing.

Today was not different. It was a lovely afternoon and since I had a few errands to run, why not cycle with a purpose? So, off I went. First into town which is roughly a 25-minute ride.

After doing what I had to do in town, I popped in to see a friend and have a nice cuppa.

Having a cuppa with a friend

After a little rest it was time to have fun and head to Keyhaven in Milford on sea. Keyhaven is 2,5 miles from Lymington. It’s a lovely ride towards the water (downhill wooohooo!).

IMG_20150821_181020 IMG_20150821_180723

Down Lower Pennington Lane you’ll reach a cycle path all the way to Keyhaven (see photos below).

IMG_20150821_182751

This is where I usually stop for a quick snack

IMG_20150821_181931

You can see the cattle and the Isle of Wight at the back

IMG_20150821_182006

At the end of this path, on the left, there are boats moored. That’s when you know you’re in Keyhaven 😉

IMG_20150821_181939

why not take a selfie?

As soon as you get to Keyhaven you’ll see The Gun Inn which is a very nice pit stop for a pint.

My favourite route from there is via Lymore Lane which goes all the way to Everton. It’s very rural but with a bit of sea air which is the best of both worlds in my opinion.

IMG_20150821_183023

My lovely bike in Keyhaven.

End of my route: 12 miles.

What a great way to welcome the weekend! TGIF!
