Cycling in the New Forest: Burley

(Portuguese version at the end of the page)

Today I decided to cycle to a village called Burley which is 9 miles from where I live.

The ride through the forest is quite pleasant and most cars respect cyclists.

Burley is a tiny village with lots of little shops and one cycle hire. So why not hop on a bus (or even drive there) and explore Burley and its surroundings by bicycle? It’s a great way to get some fresh air and to keep fit.

Burley is famous for being a “witches’ retreat” and many shops are witch-themed. The Queen’s Head pub was built in the 16th century and was notorious for smugglers (photo below).

  Burley is easily located in the heart of the New Forest, with great access from the A31 and A35. If you are using Sat Nav set your destination as BH24 4AB to head for the village centre.

Hoje eu resolvi pedalar ate o vilarejo de Burley que fica 9 milhas de onde moro (aprox. 15km).

O trajeto pela floresta eh bastante agradavel e a maioria dos carros respeita os ciclistas.

Burley eh um vilarejo minusculo com varias lojinhas e um cicle onde voce pode alugar uma bike. Entao que tal pegar um onibus (ou ate mesmo ir de carro) e explorar Burley e arredores de bicicleta? Eh uma otima maneira de respirar ar fresco e se exercitar.

Burley eh famosa por ser um retiro das bruxas e muitas lojinhas tem bruxaria como tema.

O pub chamado Queen’s Head foi construido no seculo 16 e era bem conhecido por ser um local de contrabando. (foto do pub acima).

Burley eh facilmente localizada no coracao da New Forest, com facil acesso pela A31 e A35.

Kingston Lacy

If you’re ever in Dorset I suggest a visit to Kingston Lacy. It’s a country house and estate owned by the National Trust in Wimborne Minster. The National Trust is a conservation organisation.

The house was built to resemble an Italian Palace in 1663. It was completed 2 years later.

Philae obelisk

The  Philae Obelisk that can be seen in the pictures and video (sorry, it’s in Portuguese again! worth watching nevertheless) was found in Egypt and then acquired by William John Bankes, who used to own Kingston Lacy. There are 2 inscriptions on it and one of them is believed to be Ptolemy and Cleopatra in hieroglyphic characters.

It’s said that it would have taken 7 years to transport the obelisk to Kingston Lacy. Nineteen horses were needed to raise it upright.

The Duke of Wellington laid the foundation stone in 1827.

Apart from the house itself, it’s worth going for a walk around the property and why not enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate at the tea room afterwards?

Se voce estiver pelas redondezas de Dorset, eu sugiro uma visita a Kingston Lacy que eh uma country house (“casa do campo ou palacio rural”) e estate (propriedade) que pertence ao National Trust (orgao resposavel por conservar patrimonios historicos, tipo o IPHAN).

A casa foi construida com caracteristicas de um palacio italiano em 1663 e a obra foi concluida 2 anos depois.

O obelisco Philae, que pode ser visto nas fotos e video (no texto em ingles acima), foi encontrado no Egito e entao adquirido por William John Bankes que era o dono de Kingston Lacy na epoca. O obelisco possui duas inscricoes e numa delas esta escrito Pitolomeu e Cleopatra em hieroglifos.

Acredita-se que para transportar o obelisco ate Kingston Lacy levou 7 anos e dezenove cavalos foram necessarios para ergue-lo.

A base do obelisco foi colocada pelo Duque de Wellington em 1827.

Alem da casa, vale a pena tambem fazer uma caminhada ao redor da propriedade e para finalizar, porque nao se deliciar com uma caneca de chocolate quente?

Our electric car / Nosso carro eletrico

It took us a few months to decide to get an electric car as it requires a great deal of thinking and planning. It’s 100% electric, not a hybrid. We got our car in May and it was one of the best things we’ve done this year.

Once fully charged it can give us a range of 100/110 miles. Therefore many people have asked us: “So, that means you can’t drive to Scotland then?”

Well, how many times have we driven to Scotland since I moved here in 2011? (for those who don’t know, I’m from Brazil and my husband is English). The answer is N-E-V-E-R! It does not mean that we can’t drive to Scotland, though. It just needs some more planning, that’s all.

In the UK nearly all motorway service stations have what is called Ecotricity charging stations (rapid chargers). All you have to do is register your vehicle online, and you’ll get your swipe card in the post a few days later. Once on the motorway, you can charge your car using your card. It takes 30 minutes to get to 80% charge (which is all you need, basically). And it’s free of charge, at least for now. To be honest, I don’t know how it could work in Brazil but we’re not going to discuss it right now.

My husband and I decided to get an EV due to my commuting. It’s a 45-mile return trip every day so it works wonders for us. I could get away with 2 trips on one charge but I don’t want to suffer from “range anxiety” (a term commonly used amongst EV drivers). So, I charge my car overnight as I do with my mobile phone. I just plug it in (yes, I use our standard 3-pin socket).

The advantages?

Well, not having to top up at a petrol station and getting your hands dirty and smelly. In Brazil, unlike the UK there are petrol station attendants.

It’s cheaper to run (petrol-free + maintenance).

No car tax.

No congestion tax if you ever drive to London.

Zero emission, so it’s good for our planet.

It’s got great torque.

It’s noise-free!

Being noise-free can be a bit scary at first both for driver and pedestrians. You have to be extra careful when reversing out of driveways or maneuvering in car parks. Where we live there are lots of cyclists and horse riders too. For this reason, our car is fitted with a “warning-sound button”. We can go noise-free so as not to disturb neighbours or we can have a tiny bit of noise in order to alert others of our presence (see picture below).

My husband and I usually drive it on ECO mode: it means less torque but better for the environment. The more eco you drive, the more trees you grow (see picture above) and that means you are making the most of your EV.

Levamos alguns meses ate decidirmos comprar um carro eletrico pois nao eh uma decisao facil. Nosso carro eh 100% eletrico, nao eh hibrido. Compramos nosso carro em maio e foi uma das melhores coisas que fizemos esse ano.

Uma vez 100% carregado, temos uma media de 100/110 milhas (160/176 km) para dirigir. Por isso, muitas pessoas nos perguntam: “Ah, quer dizer entao que nao da pra dirigir ate a Escocia?”

Bem, quantas vezes nos fomos ate a Escocia dirigindo desde que eu me mudei pra ca em 2011? (pra quem nao sabe, eu sou brasileira e meu marido eh ingles). A resposta eh: N-U-N-C-A! Isso nao significa que nao seja possivel, apenas requer um pouco mais de planejamento, so isso.

No Reino Unido, quase todos os postos das auto-estradas possuem o que chamamos de “Ecotricity Charging Stations” (carregadores rapidos). Basta registrar seu veiculo online e voce recebera um cartao pelo correio. Uma vez na auto-estrada, voce pode carregar o seu carro usando o cartao que voce recebeu. Em 30 minutos voce carrega seu veiculo em ate 80% (o que eh suficiente). E voce nao paga nada por isso, pelo menos por enquanto. Infelizmente nao vejo como isso poderia funcionar no Brasil mas nao vou entrar nesse assunto agora.

Meu marido e eu decidimos comprar um EV (veiculo eletrico) por causa do meu trajeto para o trabalho. Eh uma “viagem” de 45 milhas ida e volta entao o EV funciona muito bem pra gente.

Eu poderia usar o nosso carro por 2 dias sem ter que carrega-lo mas nao quero sofrer de “ansiedade de autonomia” (um termo comumente usado entre os donos de EVs aqui rs). Entao eu carrego meu carro toda noite, assim como faco com meu celular. Eu apenas coloco o carro na tomada (sim, nossa tomada padrao de 3 pinos).

Vantagens?

Bom, so de nao ter que ir ao posto de gasolina e sujar suas maos e deixa-las com aquele cheiro de gasolina ja eh um bom comeco. Aqui nao temos frentistas como no Brasil.

Eh mais barato (sem combustivel e manutencao)

Sem IPVA.

Nao precisa pagar taxa extra pra ir a Londres.

Nao eh poluente, o que eh bom para o nosso planeta.

Tem um torque otimo.

Nao tem barulho!

O fato de nao ter barulho nenhum pode ser um pouco assustador tanto para o motorista quanto para os pedestres no inicio. Temos que prestar mais atencao ao dar re saindo de casa ou ao manobrar em estacionamentos. Onde moramos tem muito ciclistas e pessoas andando a cavalo. Por esse motivo, o carro possui um botao que quando acionado faz com que o carro emita um som para chamar a atencao das pessoas (um som apenas para mostrar que tem um carro se aproximando). Podemos desativar o botao para nao perturbarmos os vizinhos ou podemos ter um barulho minimo (veja foto do botao – ultima foto no texto em ingles).

Meu marido e eu geralmente dirigimos no modo ECO: significa menos torque mas eh melhor para o meio-ambiente. Quanto mais ECO voce dirige mais arvores voce “planta” (veja foto do painel do carro) e isso significa que voce esta usando o maximo do seu carro, ecologicamente falando.

Cycling to Keyhaven

I took up cycling as a hobby and I’ve been cycling nearly every day – weather allowing.

Today was not different. It was a lovely afternoon and since I had a few errands to run, why not cycle with a purpose? So, off I went. First into town which is roughly a 25-minute ride.

After doing what I had to do in town, I popped in to see a friend and have a nice cuppa.

After a little rest it was time to have fun and head to Keyhaven in Milford on sea. Keyhaven is 2,5 miles from Lymington. It’s a lovely ride towards the water (downhill wooohooo!).

Down Lower Pennington Lane you’ll reach a cycle path all the way to Keyhaven (see photos below).

At the end of this path, on the left, there are boats moored. That’s when you know you’re in Keyhaven 😉

As soon as you get to Keyhaven you’ll see The Gun Inn which is a very nice pit stop for a pint.

My favourite route from there is via Lymore Lane which goes all the way to Everton. It’s very rural but with a bit of sea air which is the best of both worlds in my opinion.

Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol

Em dezembro de 2014 fomos a Bristol que fica no sudoeste da Inglaterra (quase umas 4 horas de carro pra gente). Eu tinha muita vontade de ir a Bristol por um unico motivo: A ponte suspensa.

Essa ponte eh mencionada no livro que usei para estudar para o Life in the UK test (teste para cidadania). A ponte eh linda demais e quando fomos a Bristol nao me decepcionei.

Fiz um video para tentar mostrar a beleza da Clifton Suspension Bridge. Como o proprio nome diz, ela eh suspensa (por cabos).

O nome do genio que a projetou? Isambard Kingdom Brunel que tinha apenas 23 anos de idade na epoca.

A construcao levou 33 anos e a ponte foi inaugurada em 1864 (a ponte fez 150 anos em 2014 – na epoca em que fiz o video).

A ponte me fascinou de tal maneira que ao chegar em casa pesquisei sobre ela e curiosamente li uma historia (veridica) de uma moca chamada Sarah Ann Henley – que por sua vez tem o mesmo sobrenome do meu pai rs.

Enfim, Sarah decidiu se jogar da ponte em 1885 depois de um termino de noivado. Naquela epoca, as mulheres usavam vestidos ou saias bem pesadas e de varias camadas. Era uma manha de muito vento e, o que aconteceu? Sarah estava caindo de cabeca pra cima e o vento fez com que a saia dela virasse uma especia de para-quedas. Ao inves de cair no Rio, ela caiu nas margens enlameadas do mesmo.

Resumo da opera: Sarah foi resgatada por varios transeuntes que testemunharam o incidente (eu e a palavra transeunte rs) e logo em seguida ela foi pedida em casamento por varios pretendentes.

Sarah casou-se com um deles e viveu ate seus 85 anos de idade.

In December 2014 we went to Bristol in the southwest of England (roughly a 4-hour drive for us). I’d been dying to go there for basically one reason: The suspension bridge.

The Clifton Suspension bridge is mentioned in the book Life in the UK (which is a test I took for my British citizenship). It’s a beautiful piece of engineering and when we got there I wasn’t let down.

I made a video to try to show its beauty. It’s called suspension bridge because of the way it’s hanging from its cables. (Sorry readers, the video is in Portuguese but you can still see how amazing it looks).

The name of the genius who designed it? Isambard Kingdom Brunel who was 23 years old then.

It took 33 years for the bridge to be built and it was open in 1864 (it was its 150th anniversary when I made the video).

I was so fascinated by the bridge that when I got home I googled it and found a very interesting story of a young lady called Sarah Ann Henley – who happened to have my father’s surname haha

Anyway, one day in 1885, Sarah decided to jump off the bridge after a breakup. Back then, the ladies used to wear long and heavy dresses with multiple layers.

It was a very windy morning and what happened then? Sarah was falling feet first when a gust of air blew beneath her skirt and blew her away from the water. She fell on the mud almost in a sitting position.

In a nutshell: Sarah was rescued by several passers-by who had witnessed the whole incident and soon after that she was bombarded with marriage proposals.

Eventually Sarah got married and lived up to the age of 85.

Concurso de Espantalhos / Scarecrow Contest

Espantalho (substantivo): Boneco ou qualquer objeto para espantar os passaros das searas, hortas, etc. (fonte: aurelio)

Todo ano aqui no meu bairro acontece o concurso de espantalhos no verao.

O que vem a ser isso? Bom, nada mais eh do que um evento para arrecadar fundos para a comunidade local. Cada morador que quiser participar, paga uma taxa e expoe seu espantalho no quintal de sua casa em uma area que seja facilmente vista por todos os transeuntes (adoro essa palavra, transeuntes)

No meu bairro deve ter pelo menos uns 30 espantalhos espalhados. Resolvi sair de bicicleta para fotografar alguns para postar aqui.

O concurso possui um tema. Por exemplo, ano passado foi: pessoas famosas (tinha Michael Jackson, a Rainha Elizabeth, Simon Cowel entre outros).

Como voces podem ver nas fotos, cada espantalho tem um numero. As pessoas que quiserem votar, recebem um mapa com a trilha (trail) mostrando a localizacao de cada espantalho e o objetivo eh tentar identificar quem o espantalho representa  (como eu disse, ano passado tivemos o Michael Jackson e tambem o Usain Bolt, velocista) e tambem votar no mais bonito.

Existem dois tipos de premiacao:

1. para quem tiver o espantalho mais parecido com a figura ou personalidade representada
2. para quem tiver o maior numero de votos de espantalho mais “bonito” ou mais “bem feito”.

A premiacao acontece no festival da comunidade no ultimo fim de semana de agosto.

O mais legal disso tudo? Eh voce ir ao mercadinho do bairro, a farmacia ou salao de beleza e ouvir as pessoas comentando: “voce viu a Rainha na rua tal? quem eh aquele na rua principal? eu ja vi uns 15 e voce?”

English version:

Scarecrow (noun): an object made to resemble a human figure, set up to scare birds away from a field where crops are growing.

Every year in my neighbourhood there’s a scarecrow contest in the summer.

What does it mean? Well, it’s basically an event to raise money for the local community. Each community member who wants to take part in the scarecrow trail contest pays a small fee and displays their scarecrows in their front garden/driveway. They have to make sure the scarecrows can be seen by everyone who cycles, walks or drives by.

There are at least 30 scarecrows scattered around my neighbourhood. I decided to cycle around the neighbourhood so as to take a few photos and post them here.

The contest has a theme. For instance, last year the theme was “famous people” (There was Michael Jackson, Queen Elizabeth, Simon Cowel among others).

As you can see in the photos, each scarecrow has a number. If you want to vote, you are given a map with the scarecrow trail where you can find the exact location of each scarecrow. The voters have to try and identify who the scarecrows represent and also vote for the best one (as I mentioned before, there was a Michael Jackson and Usain Bolt, sprinter).

There are 2 types of prizes:

1. for the most easily identified scarecrow (i.e. the closest in looks to the person/character being represented)
2. for the best-looking or the best made scarecrow

Prizes are given at the community fete the last weekend of August.

The coolest thing about it? When you go to the local shops, the pharmacy or the hairdresser’s you overhear people commenting: “have you seen the Queen on such and such street? Who’s that one on the main street? I’ve seen 15 and you?”

Dentista “Faca-voce-mesmo” (DIY : Do it yourself)

Mao de obra aqui na Inglaterra e MUITO cara, por isso o conceito DIY (Do it yourself: faca voce mesmo) eh extremamente popular. Ok, compreensivel.

Existem varias lojas DIY onde voce pode comprar a materia-prima pra fazer seus proprios moveis, estantes, sheds, etc.

Mas este post nao eh sobre moveis, e sim sobre DENTES. Isso mesmo, DENTES!

Em qualquer farmacia eh possivel encontrar kits “faca-voce-mesmo” para consertar, colar restaurar dentes, blocos, coroas, pontes (you name it!).

Conheco VARIOS britanicos com dentes lindos, serio! Mas tambem conheco MUITOS que nao ligam para a saude bucal, seja por falta de grana (fato) seja por puro descaso. Cultural? Sera?

Dentistas aqui no Reino Unido geralmente sao estrangeiros (a minha eh Iraniana graduada na Suecia rs). Voce pode frequentar o dentista pelo NHS (sistema publico de saude) ou particular. Pelo NHS voce paga uma taxa (tipo £50) para ser atendido seja qual for a emergencia (estou usando como base o vilarejo onde moro, pois sei que nas grandes cidades voce pode ir na emergencia de um hospital e ser atendido la, de graca).

Quando fui a minha dentista (que adoro) fazer minha limpeza habitual, me surpreendi quando ela e sua assistente bateram palmas quando olharam meus dentes e viram que eu era adepta do fio dental (ok, nao uso a cada escovada mas uso todo dia sim!).

Uma amiga minha outro dia me perguntou:

amiga: “Voce tem dentes tao bonitos, o que voce faz?”

eu: “escovo a cada refeicao, uso fio dental e faco limpeza no dentista 2x ao ano”

amiga: “Ah nao…fio dental nao uso nao”

eu, chocada, pensei: “oi?”

Se voce for a um mercado ou farmacia, voce vai se surpreender na secao de dentifricios: tem TUDO! Pasta de dente para quem fuma, pra quem bebe cha, pra quem tem alergia a sorbitol, pra crianca, pra gengiva, etc. Todos os tipos de enxaguante bucal, varios kits de clareamento, varios tipos de fio dental – eu fico parada olhando aquelas embalagens lindas sem saber qual levar rs

Parece que a filosofia aqui eh reversa: melhor remediar do que prevenir.

Mas afinal, a saude nao comeca pela boca?

Cartoes para todas as Ocasioes / Cards for all Occasions

Os Britanicos sao famosos por varias coisas: o cha da tarde, a familia real, o tempo chuvoso, a educacao, e varias outras coisas! Cartoes para todas as ocasioes (eu disse T O D A S) eh uma delas.

No meu primeiro ano de moradia aqui me surpreendi com a quantidade de cartoes que recebi: de natal, pascoa, aniversario, casa nova, casamento, por passar no teste de motorista (sim, eu disse, para todas as ocasioes rs) etc

Pra ser sincera? Eu adoooooroooo receber cartoes! Nessa era de redes socias e apps, ja acho raridade a gente receber um telefonema, imagina receber um cartao escrito a mao? Sem contar que a pessoa foi la, escolheu, comprou, escreveu, foi ao correio e postou. E isso tudo ela o fez pensando no destinatario! Nao eh o maximo?

A galera do Brasil ja sabe que quando chega um envelope coloridinho do correio com o selo da rainha so pode ter sido enviado por mim 😉

The British are famous for many things: tea, the Royal family, the weather, for being polite and many other things! Cards for all occasions (I said A L L) is one of them.

In my very first year living in the UK I was amazed by the amount of cards I received: Christmas, Easter, birthday, new house, wedding, for having passed my driving test (yes, I did say for all occasions lol) etc

To be honest? I loooooooove receiving cards! Nowadays with social networks and apps I find it really rare to get a phone call let alone receive a handwritten card? Not to mention that the sender went to the shop, picked one out, bought it, wrote it, went to the post office and sent it. And they did all this thinking of the recipient! Isn’t it groovy?

People in Brazil already know when they get a coloured envelop with the HRH’s stamp in the post – it could only have been sent by me 😉

Becoming a Bone Marrow donor in the UK / Como ser doador de medula ossea no Reino Unido

Passo a passo para se cadastrar como doador de medula ossea aqui no Reino Unido:
1 – Vc precisa ja ser doador de sangue cadastrado pelo NHS. Se nao for, na sua primeira doacao de sangue vc pode fazer tudo junto.
2 – Na hora da doacao de sangue vc tem que solicitar o formulario para se cadastrar como doador de medula ossea (bone marrow donor)
3 – Antes de coletarem o sangue para a doacao (aproximadamente 500ml) eles tiram uma ampola extra pro banco de dados de medula ossea.
4 – O cadastro fica ativado por 30 anos.
5 – O database deles eh INTERNACIONAL – woohooooo (alem do livreto explicando, perguntei a 2 enfermeiras sobre o Brasil e elas disseram que SIM)

                         

Be nice to me, I gave blood today!

Breamore House

If you happen to be in Hampshire I’d recommend a visit to Breamore House.

Breamore House is a Manor House that was completed in 1583 and is one of the oldest estates in the area.

Nowadays, the house belongs to the Hulse family who still lives there.

The house is open to the public and a guided tour is recommended.

Unfortunately, photos are not allowed once you’re inside the house but I filmed its surroundings (sorry readers, the video is in Portuguese but you are very welcome to watch it nevertheless).

In 2005 Breamore House was used as one of the locations for the film Pride and Prejudice.
