If you are a commuter and usually take the train to work, you must have seen these Brompton foldable bike docks at the train station, right? If you haven’t noticed them, perhaps you’ve seen people going to and from the stations on some funny-looking bikes?

Anyway, if you are bicycle fan like me and would like to try out one of these bikes, why not hire one for the day? The price starts at £2.50!

All you have to do is register online (click here), find the nearest dock to you and book one 😉 Also, you don’t have to return the bicycle to the dock of origin. You can return it to any dock! It’s kind of similar to the Boris bikes in London (click here) but the advantage is that with these foldable ones you can take them to work, home or on the train. They don’t take up much space.

Se voce ainda nao notou os docks, talvez voce ja tenha visto pessoas indo e vindo para a estacao de trem em bicicletas com uma ergonomia diferente?

Enfim, se voce tambem curte bicicletas como eu, e gostaria de testar essas bicicletas, por que nao aluga uma por um dia? Os precos sao a partir de £2.50 por dia!

O que voce precisa fazer? Cadastre-se online (clique aqui), ache o “dock” mais perto de voce e reserve uma bike 😉 Outra coisa, voce nao precisa devolver a bicicleta para o mesmo “dock” de onde a recolheu. Voce pode retorna-la para qualquer “dock” do esquema! Eh um pouco parecido com o sistema das Boris bikes de Londres (clique aqui) mas a vantagem eh que essas bicicletas (Brompton) sao dobraveis e voce pode leva-las para o trabalho, para casa ou no trem. Elas nao ocupam muito espaco.

Carteira de Habilitacao Britanica / British Driving Licence

Pra voce que assim como eu, se mudou do Brasil pro Reino Unido aqui vai um post sobre o processo (e o teste) para tirar a carteira de motorista britanica (baseado na minha experiencia de 2012).

De acordo com o DVLA, o Brasileiro que possui CNH pode dirigir no Reino Unido por ate 12 meses da sua entrada no pais. Depois disso, eh preciso fazer os testes para adquirir a habilitacao britanica. Mesmo quem tem o PID (Permissao Internacional para Dirigir), que eh a carteira internacional tirada pelo Detran, nao pode continuar dirigindo com ela ao final do periodo de 12 meses. E outra coisa, como aqui no Reino Unido o seguro eh obrigatorio, quando se tem uma carteira de motorista internacional ou estrangeira, o seguro fica muito caro.

Bom, o primeiro passo eh aplicar para a carteira provisoria (provisional driving licence) que se faz pelo correio – tudo muito simples. A partir dai, voce tem 2 opcoes: ou ir direto fazer os testes (escrito, hazard perception – onde vc assiste uns clipes e tem que clicar o mouse toda vez que voce vir um perigo em potencial – e o teste pratico) ou fazer algumas aulas com um instrutor (o que eu recomendo, pois tem muito macete e muito principio bem diferente dos do Brasil).

Atencao: Voce so pode fazer aulas com um instrutor quando ja tiver de posse da sua carteira provisoria.

As provas:

O primeiro passo eh agendar o teste teorico e hazard perception (faz-se os 2 no mesmo dia). Aconselho  comprar um livrinho do Highway Code que venha com CD ROM, pois pratiquei muito os simulados no computador.

Uma vez que se tenha passado nas provas acima, eh a hora do temido e destemido teste pratico. Vou descrever aqui como aconteceu comigo:

Fui com meu instrutor ao centro de testes e permiti que ele me acompanhasse dentro do carro durante a prova (voce tem essa opcao. No meu caso eu achei melhor porque se eu nao passasse o Kevin poderia me ajudar numa prova futura).

O teste de visao: O examinador me pediu para ler a placa de um carro a uma certa distancia, ali no estacionamento mesmo do centro de testes. E soh.

Ao entrar no carro, tem a parte do show and tell, onde o examinador pede pra voce ou mostrar ou explicar 2 coisas sobre o funcionamento do carro (por isso indico fazer umas aulas com o instrutor antes, pois ele te da toda a dica, inclusive tudo escrito num papel).

Passado o show and tell, eh hora de comecar a prova pratica propriamente dita (pelo menos foi como aconteceu comigo):

Independent driving: o examinador explica que voce ira dirigir por 10 minutos sem nenhuma instrucao, apenas a que foi dada por ele antes – que no meu caso foi: siga em direcao a Romsey. O examinador pergunta se voce prefere que ele explique o que voce vai fazer (onde ele apenas fala: saindo daqui voce vira a direita, depois na rotatoria pega a segunda sainda, depois segue reto etc) ou se voce prefere ver um mapa.

Passado esses 10 minutos de silencio sepulcral durante o independent driving, o examinador comeca a te dar as instrucoes sobre o que fazer.

Ele me pediu pra fazer algumas paradas (pull over) e 2 manobras.

Ressalva: o instrutor da auto-escola vai te preparar para 5 manobras, dentre elas, 2 serao cobradas no dia do teste. As manobras sao: Parada de emergencia, baliza paralela (igual a do Brasil, bay parking (que eh como estacionar em vagas tipo de mercados e shoppings), 3 point turning (fazer um retorno ma propria rua) e reverse around a corner (que voce manobra de re em uma rua secundaria e volta pra rua de origem).

Se nao me engano, voce pode perder ate 15 pontos no teste, desde que as falhas sejam leves. Se cometer uma falta grave tera que refazer o teste.

No final do teste voce recebe um relatorio com suas faltas

As dicas preciosas que meu instrutor me deu sao:

Lane discipline: onde voce tem que se policiar para ficar na sua faixa da rodovia, e se for mudar de faixa, tem que indicar e se certificar que nao vai fazer o motorista de tras frear.

Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre: qualquer mudanca de direcao, essa eh a ordem a se seguir: Olhar no espelho, indicar e so depois mudar a direcao do carro. Parece obvio ne?

Como um amigo meu ingles fala: Eh um teste facil de se passar mas tambem facil de se reprovar rsrs

Here’s a post if you, like me, moved from Brazil to the UK and would like to exchange your Brazilian CNH to the UK Full driving licence (post based on my experience in 2012).

According to the DVLA, Brazilians who have a CNH can drive in the UK up to 12 months of their arrival. After that, it’s mandatory to take the driving tests in order to get the UK licence. Even if you have PID (which is the international licence issued by the DETRAN) you cannot carry on driving after the 12-month period. In the UK, car insurance is not optional, so if you have a foreign licence you’ll pay an arm and a leg for yours.

Well, the first step is to apply for your provisional licence and it’s done at the post office – all very easy and simple. From then on, you have 2 options: take the tests straight away (theory, hazard perception – where you watch a few clips and have to click the mouse everytime you think there’s a potential hazard – and the practical test) or you can have a few driving lessons with a qualified instructor (recommended because there are a lot of tricks they teach you and heaps of different things).

Attention: One can only have lessons with a qualified instructor once they have their provisional licences.

The Tests:

The first step is to book the theory and hazard perception tests (both on the same day). I suggest you buy a Highway Code booklet with a CD ROM because I did loads of practice tests on the computer.

Once you’ve passed the tests above, it’s time for the daunting practical test. I’ll describe here what happened in my case:

I went to the test centre with my instructor and I allowed him to accompany me in the car during the test (this is optional. In my case I thought it was a good idea in case I didn’t pass so that Kevin could help me out in the future).

The eye test: The examiner asked me to read a car registration number form a distance at the test centre’s car park. And that was it.

As you get in the car, there’s the show and tell part, where the examiner asks you to either show or tell 2 things about how the car works (one of the reasons why I recommend a driving instructor because they can train you beforehand and they even give you a cheat sheet).

After the show and tell, it’s time to start the practical test (at least that’s what happened in my case in 2012):

Independent driving: the examiner explains that you will drive for 10 minutes without any guidance, just the instruction previously given – in my case it was: follow the signs to Romsey (town). The examiner also asks you if you prefer verbal instructions or to be shown a map.

After these endless 10 minutes of tense silence, the examiner starts to give you further instructions.

He asked me to pull over a few times and 2 manoeuvres.

Important note: Your driving instructor will prepare you for 5 manoeuvres of which 2 will be asked to be done on the day of your test. The manoeuvres are: emergency stop, parallel parking, bay parking, 3 point turning, and reverse around a corner (pictures in Portuguese text above)

If I’m not mistaken, you can have up to 15 faults as long as they’re minor ones. If you have a major fault you’ll have to retake the test.

The useful tips my instructor gave me are:

Lane discipline: where you have to make sure you stay in lane and indicate if you want to change lanes, without making the driver behind you brake too hard.

Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre: every time you change directions, this is the order to be followed: check mirrors, indicate and then change directions. It’s kind of obvious, right?

As an English friend of mine says: It’s such and easy test to pass but also very easy to fail.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dengue Fever in Brazil / Dengue no Brasil

Well, it’s been a while since I last posted here because my husband and I were on holiday in Brazil but then, even though we had used lots of sprays (OFF and Repelex), I was bitten by a lousy mosquito and had Dengue fever.

It started with a very high fever (around 38.5 – 39 C) and a splitting headache. At first we thought it was a heat stroke due to the fact that we were doing lots of activities in the sun and the temperature in Rio was around 40C. That was day 1.

To make a long story short:

1 – I spent 9 days in bed, dehydrated and had to go on a drip for 2 days (I went through 19 bags of drip!).

2 – My eyes hurt so much I could not keep them open.

3 – I thought my brain had swollen.

4 – My platelets count was way bellow 140,000. It dropped from 111,000 to 101,000 in 2 days.

5 – On day 7, my feet were swollen and my palms and soles were very itchy.

Feet were so swollen my havaianas wouldn’t fit!

6 – I spent Christmas on a drip – did not spend it with the entire family as I’d planned to.

Anyway, I’ve decided to write this post to make people aware of the disease (especially with the Zika virus around as well). If you’re planning to go to Brazil, make sure you protect yourself and make good use of those sprays with DEET (check percentage on the labels).

There’s an epidemic in Brazil right now and when we got to the UK, my husband started with the symptoms and was diagnosed with Dengue fever as well. He stayed in bed for a week and during the same period, my father, who is in Brazil, also had it nearly as severe as mine.

They say  there’s a vaccine coming out soon, so fingers crossed it’ll work. Meanwhile, if you intend to go to Brazil, do some research and do not forget your sprays 😉

Back in the UK (on the mend)

Bem, ja faz um tempinho desde a ultima vez que fiz um post aqui porque eu e meu marido fomos passar ferias no Brasil, mas aih, mesmo tendo usado varios tipos de spray (OFF e Repelex), eu fui mordida por um mosquito desgracado e tive Dengue.

Comecou com um febre altissima (por volta dos 38.5 – 39C) e uma dor de cabeca insuportavel. No inicio pensamos que pudesse ser insolacao pois haviamos feito bastante coisa no sol e a temperatura no Rio estava na casa dos 40 graus. Isso foi apenas o primeiro dia.

Pra encurtar:

1 – Passei 9 dias de cama, desidratada e tive que ficar no soro por 2 dias (usei 19 bolsas de soro!)

2 – Meus olhos doiam tanto que nao conseguia mante-los abertos.

3 – Tinha a sensacao de que meu cerebro havia inchado.

4 – Minhas plaquetas estavam bem abaixo dos 140 mil. Elas cairam de 111mil para 101 mil em 2 dias.

5 – No setimo dia, meus pes estavam inchados e as palmas das maos e as solas dos pes cocavam muito.

6 – Passei natal no soro – nao passei com a familia toda como havia planejado 😦

Enfim, decidi escrever esse post para alertar as pessoas da doenca (ainda mais com o tal do Zika virus agora). Se voce esta planejando uma viagem ao Brasil, certifique-se que voce esta protegido, use bastante os repelentes com DEET (verifique a porcentagem na embalagem).

Let’s talk about “tanques” / Vamos falar de “tanques”

In nearly every Brazilian house there’s a special sink known as “tanque”. It’s usually outdoors or in utility rooms and it’s used for cleaning mops, rags, dirty shoes, delicate pieces of clothing etc.

In the past it used to be just a sink with a separate washboard and according to Wikipedia, in the US, this washboard became a musical instrument (some trivia for you 😉 )

If you have a chance to visit a Brazilian house, you’re bound to see one tanque in the utility room or somewhere near the kitchen.

Em quase todas as casas brasileiras existe uma pia especial chamada de “tanque”. Geralmente ela eh encontrada do lado de fora da casa ou na parte de lavanderia e eh usada para limpar esfregoes, panos de chao, sapatos sujos, roupas delicadas etc.

No passado o tanque era apenas uma pia com uma tabua separada para lavar roupas e, de acordo com a Wikipedia, nos Estados Unidos, a tabua separada virou um instrumento musical (trivia pra vc 😉 )

Se voce tiver a oportunidade de visitar uma casa brasileira, voce fatalmente achara um tanque na parte de lavanderia ou em algum lugar perto da cozinha.

Estou tentando convencer meu marido a me dar um tanque e, se voce tem um tanque em casa, coloque nos comentarios abaixo – especialmente se voce nao mora no Brasil 🙂

Teaching English in England / Ensinando Ingles na Inglaterra

Hang on a minute! You teach English as a foreign language in England? How come?

Well, I’ve been an English teacher for over 18 years now (ESOL – English as a Second Language and EFL – English as a Foreign Language). When I moved to the UK I was advised to get an ESOL certification so as to be able to work in the same field. The most popular qualification is called CELTA, Cambridge (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults).

Reliable language schools in the UK are accredited by the British Council and you cannot teach at these institutions if you do not hold an ESOL certificate (I know there’s a Trinity one too).

How does CELTA work?

Well, it’s a course where you teach real-life students (volunteers) and you are constantly assessed. You can do the 4-week full-time one (like me) or you can do a part-time one in the evenings if I’m not mistaken (of course it takes longer). There are also written assignments every week.

Before your course, you need to do a pre-course task and be interviewed. During the interview they’ll ask you questions about the task you’d done and also some random grammar questions. If you’re experienced this could be a nice chat and quite fun 😉

Can a non-native speaker do a CELTA?

Of course! I’m a non-native! When I did my course there were 3 of us foreigners. The other 14 were British and I know it can sound a bit daunting but as I mentioned before, if you’re an experienced teacher your grammar skills will be much better than a native’s. By the way, CELTA is said to be for inexperienced teachers but I wanted to do it as it’s a minimum requirement to teach in the UK.

Most of my CELTA classmates were doing it because they wanted to teach English abroad and most of them found jobs as soon as they finished the course. Again, once you’re a CELTA holder, you can teach English anywhere in the world.

What happens after CELTA?

If you’re thinking of broadening your knowledge and if you’d like to become a DOS (Director of Studies) then your next step is the DELTA (a 9-week full-time course) and once you become a DELTA you can also teach at universities 😉

Perai! Voce da aulas de ingles como lingua estrangeira na Inglaterra? Como assim?

Bem, eu sou professora de ingles ha mais de 18 anos (ESOL – Ingles como segunda lingua e EFL – Ingles como lingua estrangeira). Quando me mudei para o reino Unido fui aconselhada a adquirir uma certificacao para que me possibilitasse a trabalhar na mesma area. Avaliacoes escritas tambem sao feitas toda semana.

Antes de iniciar o seu curso, voce precisa fazer uma tarefa chamada pre-course e se submeter a uma entrevista. Nessa entrevista eles vao te perguntar varias coisas sobre a tarefa que voce fez e algumas perguntas gramaticais aleatorias. Se voce for experiente a entrevista pode ser legal e ate bem divertida 😉

Uma pessoa que nao tem ingles como primeira lingua pode fazer o CELTA?

Claro! Eu sou uma “non-native”! Quando fiz meu curso, haviam 3 estrangeiros alem de mim. Os outros candidatos eram britanicos e eu sei que pode ser um pouco assustador mas, como mencionei antes, se voce for experiente, sua gramatica sera bem melhor do que a de um nativo. Ah! O CELTA eh pra quem nao tem experiencia nenhuma como professor mas eu quis faze-lo mesmo assim pois era o requisito minimo para se dar aula no Reino Unido.

A maioria dos meus colegas de CELTA estavam ali porque eles queriam ensinar ingles pelo mundo e a maioria deles conseguiu emprego assim que terminaram o curso. Uma vez que voce possui o diploma CELTA, voce esta habilitado a ensinar ingles em qualquer lugar do mundo.

O que acontece depois do CELTA?

Se voce estiver pensando em expandir seu conhecimento e se gostaria de se tornar diretor academico (DOS – Director of Studies) entao seu proximo passo sera o DELTA (um curso full-time de 9 semanas) e uma vez que voce se torna DELTA, voce tambem esta qualificado a dar aulas em universidades 😉

England’s countryside

As an expat, many people think I live in London just because I happen to be in England. Nope, I do not live in London. I live 102 miles away from Big Ben, in the New Forest (southern England).

Due to the amazing landscape where I live, I often go cycling around the neighbourhood and today was no different. I got home from work, put my cycling gear on and off I went for a quick ride for approximately half an hour (it was a quickie lol).

  

Anyway, I wanted to share the pictures I took of this amazing part of the country. I even manage to make a short video too.

Como sou uma expatriada, muitas pessoas pensam que eu vivo em Londres so porque eu estou na Inglaterra. Nao, nao moro em Londres. Moro a 163 km do Big Ben, numa area chamada The New Forest (A Nova Floresta, que fica no sul da Inglaterra).

Devido a paisagem maravilhosa de onde moro, eu costumo andar de bicicleta pelas redondezas e hoje nao foi diferente. Cheguei em casa do trabalho, coloquei a minha roupa de ciclista e la fui eu para uma pedalada rapida de aproximadamente 30 minutos (foi uma rapidinha rsrs).

Enfim, eu queria compartilhar as fotos que tirei dessa parte maravilhosa da Inglaterra. Fiz um video tambem (confira o link no texto em Ingles).

Cycling in the New Forest: Burley

Today I decided to cycle to a village called Burley which is 9 miles from where I live.

The ride through the forest is quite pleasant and most cars respect cyclists.

Burley is a tiny village with lots of little shops and one cycle hire. So why not hop on a bus (or even drive there) and explore Burley and its surroundings by bicycle? It’s a great way to get some fresh air and to keep fit.

Burley is famous for being a “witches’ retreat” and many shops are witch-themed. The Queen’s Head pub was built in the 16th century and was notorious for smugglers (photo below).

  Burley is easily located in the heart of the New Forest, with great access from the A31 and A35. If you are using Sat Nav set your destination as BH24 4AB to head for the village centre.

Hoje eu resolvi pedalar ate o vilarejo de Burley que fica 9 milhas de onde moro (aprox. 15km).

O trajeto pela floresta eh bastante agradavel e a maioria dos carros respeita os ciclistas.

Burley eh um vilarejo minusculo com varias lojinhas e um cicle onde voce pode alugar uma bike. Entao que tal pegar um onibus (ou ate mesmo ir de carro) e explorar Burley e arredores de bicicleta? Eh uma otima maneira de respirar ar fresco e se exercitar.

Burley eh famosa por ser um retiro das bruxas e muitas lojinhas tem bruxaria como tema.

O pub chamado Queen’s Head foi construido no seculo 16 e era bem conhecido por ser um local de contrabando. (foto do pub acima).

Burley eh facilmente localizada no coracao da New Forest, com facil acesso pela A31 e A35.

Eden Project, Cornwall

When people mention England most of us think of London straight away, right?

Well, it’s quite natural to think of London once it’s the capital of England but do people think of Brasilia as soon as one mentions Brazil? I doubt it!

Anyway, this post is not about Brazil – not yet – but about other attractions that England has to offer. We’ll talk about Cornwall in the south west of England!

It’s an amazing county with an outstanding coastline, mild weather (good for surfers!) and one of my favourite ice cream flavours: clotted cream (to die for!).

Besides the above mentioned, the Eden Project is a must-see!

In the photo you can see  adjoining domes that house thousands of plant species, and each enclosure emulates a natural biome.

Once you go inside, the temperature is quite tropical and you’ll be amazed to find all kinds of plants that wouldn’t stand a chance if they weren’t inside these domes.

Anyway, if you’re heading towards Cornwall I suggest you visit the Eden Project. Make sure you have a few hours to spare because there’s so much to see…

Trivia: In 2002 the Eden Project was used as a filming location for the James Bond film, Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan 😉

A Brazilian in the UK

Right,

as my very first  post was in Portuguese I thought it would be nice to have the odd post in English as well.

It all started when I decided to record my experiences in the UK on camera (either by taking photos or making videos).

Both photos and videos soon became quite popular amongst my friends and I started to have a few requests from them hence the necessity to start a blog.

I hope we can share ideas and experiences and I do hope you guys (readers) can understand Brazilians a bit better – I know we can be a bit weird but who isn’t? haha
