If you happen to be in Angra dos Reis, RJ, you can visit the Nuclear Power Station also known as Angra 1 (since 1985) and Angra 2 (since 2001) – Angra 3 is being built at the moment.

There are guided tours for groups of 15 to 40 people that need to be previously booked by phone.

As there were just 4 of us, we were able to go in the Visitors’ centre only. There are heaps of information there plus a 7 minute video. However, it’s all in Portuguese only.

Angra’s nuclear reactor is approximately 10 metres high and weighs 233,000 kg! This type of reactor – PWR –  is the safest in the world and there are only 240 units all over the world.

Let’s talk rubbish / Vamos falar de lixo

Ola pessoal!

Hoje resolvi falar sobre o lixo aqui na Inglaterra. Toda residencia recebe do seu council (orgao responsavel pela cidade ou municipio, tipo uma prefeitura) 2 rolos de saco de lixo: um preto e outro transparente (que a gente chama de branco rs).

O saco de lixo branco eh o que vai para reciclagem. Na foto abaixo voces podem ver (e ler) o que eh permitido colocar no saco branco. O que nao estiver na lista vai pro lixo preto, que eh o lixo “normal”.

Aqui onde moro, a coleta de lixo eh feita toda quinta-feira as 7:30 da manha! Sim, sem atraso! Entao todos os moradores colocam os dois tipos de lixo nas calcadas em frente as suas casas.

Estamos em setembro e como voces tambem podem perceber, na foto do lixo preto, ja tem o calendario de coleta de lixo na epoca do Natal e Ano Novo.

Mas e garrafas e vidros?

Bom, cada casa possui uma caixa preta, de plastico para depositar vidros e garrafas usados e quando recebemos a caixa pela primeira vez, ela vem com uma cartinha explicando o dia da coleta (pois eh diferente do outro lixo e menos frequente) e a cor da sua area. No caso de onde moro, a nossa cor eh a verde.

A coleta dos vidros acontece uma veze ao mes e o processo eh o mesmo do lixo comum. Deixamos nossas caixas na calcada em frente as nossas casas. Detalhe: as garrafas tem que estar organizadas dentro da caixa, nao pode ter nenhum gargalo pra fora. Ao recolher os vidros, os lixeiros devolvem as caixas vazias viradas para baixo (todas as caixas vem com o numero da sua casa para que nao haja confusao).

Agora, se voce esqueceu do dia das coletas, nao tem problema. Voce pode esperar ate a proxima semana ou se voce nao gosta de acumular lixo em casa (como nos rs), sugiro uma visita ao Skip que eh um centro de reciclagem. Ja postei sobre isso antes. Confira o post O Famoso “Skip”.

Hi guys!

Today I decided to talk about rubbish here in England. Every household receives 2 rolls of rubbish bin bags (a black and a transparent one – that we refer to as “white”) from the local council.

The white bin bag is for items to be recycled. If you scroll back to the text in Portuguese you can see the photos and read what is allowed in the white bag. The rest goes in the black bin, which is the “ordinary” rubbish.

Here where I live, the rubbish is collected every Thursday at 7:30 am! That’s right, no delays! So, everyone leaves both their bin bags on the pavement in front of their houses.

We are in September and you can see that they’ve already printed their end-of-the-year calendar in the black bin bags (refer to photo above).

What about bottles and glass?

Well, each household has got a black plastic box to be used as a glass and bottle bin that we’d also received from the council. Together with the box, there was a letter stating the collection day and your area colour. For instance, our colour is green.

The glass collection is usually once a month and we do the same thing as the ordinary rubbish. We leave our boxes on the pavement in front of our houses. One interesting fact is that the bottles must be neatly put in the box and no bottle necks should be sticking out. Once the glasses are collected, the bin men return the boxes and put them facing down in your driveway (every box is marked with the house numbers so as not to be misplaced).

Well, if you forget to put your bins out or your boxes out on collection day, no need to worry. You can either wait until the next collection or you can drive to the nearest Tip (Recycling Centre). Check the post called O Famoso Skip (it’s in Portuguese but you can enjoy the video!)

Pessoal,

quem mora no interior da Inglaterra como eu (nao sei das cidades grandes) certamente conhece o Skip ou Tip como eles chamam aqui.

O Skip nada mais eh do que um lixao/centro de reciclagem, onde cada pessoa deposita o seu lixo seja ele organico ou nao.

La tudo eh separado por cacambas e muito organizado. O Britanico adora uma fila rs
