I just love the use of Present Perfect 😉

It may seem obvious to many but at least to me, born and raised in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it is not, I mean, it WAS not.

Unlike Brazil, here in the UK nearly every car park works with the pay and display system – of course there are also shopping centre car parks which we pay when we leave, just like in Brazil.

Anyway, when I first arrived and started to drive here I was given the odd look here and there when I used to stand by the pay and display machine and stare at it. Then, I figured it out by observing other users (duh!).

Make sure it’s not a NO CHANGE GIVEN machine

So, it works like this:

1. Park your car at an available slot (try to find one near the pay machine)
2. Go to the pay machine and insert coins according to the amount of time you need to stay – you can also pay by phone using your credit/debit card. Attention if you’re using coins: There are machines with NO CHANGE GIVEN signs which made me overpay a few times (another duh!)
3. Once you get your parking ticket (some might be stickers), display it by the windscreen or stick it on the window. The amount of time you’re suppose to park will be on your ticket.
4. Pray that you won’t need to rush whatever you’re doing in order to purchase another ticket.
5. It’s no unusual to see a driver leaving the car park give an arriving driver his used ticket with a few minutes or hours to spare – it’s happened to me twice!

Some might think this post is silly but I do hope it helps other people who are not used to these Pay and Display car parks and it also makes me wonder: Would it work in Brazil???

Pode parecer obvio para muitos mas pelo menos pra mim, nascida e criada no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, nao eh, ou melhor, nao ERA.

Ao contrario do Brasil, aqui no Reino Unido quase todo estacionamento funciona com o sistema de “Pay and Display” (pague e deixe a mostra) – claro que existem tambem estacionamentos de shopping onde a gente soh paga ao sair, igual no Brasil.

Enfim, quando eu cheguei aqui na Inglaterra e comecei a dirigir vira e mexe alguem me olhava estranho toda vez que me viam parada em frente a maquina do Pay and Display, encarando-a. Aih, eu descobri como funcionava depois de observar outros usuarios (dã!).

Entao, funciona assim:

1. Estacione seu carro em um local disponivel (tente estacionar perto de uma maquina de pay and display).
2. Va ate a maquina e insira moedas de acordo com o tempo que voce precisara permanecer no local – voce tambem pode pagar por telefone com seu cartao de credito/debito mas nao sao todos os estacionamentos que oferecem essa opcao. Atencao se voce estiver usando moedas: Existem maquinas que nao dao troco (NO CHANGE GIVEN) e eu ja paguei bem mais do que devia algumas vezes por nao ter lido a mensagem na maquina (outro dã!)
3. Uma vez que voce tenha seu ticket (alguns podem ser adesivos), coloque-o a mostra perto do parabrisa ou cole-o no vidro. O periodo que voce podera usufruir do estacionamento estara impresso no seu ticket.
4. Reze para que voce nao tenha que sair correndo e interromper o que voce esta fazendo para ter que ir ao estacionamento comprar mais um ticket.
5. Nao eh incomum ver um motorista dar o seu ticket semi-usado, com alguns bons minutos ou ate horas de saldo,  a um motorista recem chegado no estacionamento – ja aconteceu comigo 2 vezes!

Alguns podem achar que esse post eh bobo mas eu espero que possa ajudar algumas pessoas que nao estao acostumadas com esse sistema e isso tambem me faz pensar: Sera que o Pay and Display funcionaria no Brasil???
