British Slang and a few expressions / Girias e expressoes britanicas

(Versao em Portugues no final da pagina)

Being fluent in a language means you can communicate with native speakers without any problems right? Well, it’s debatable.

Every language in the world has got its peculiarities and nuances and English (well, British English) is no exception.

Wanna test your knowledge? Here are some of my favourite expressions (at least the ones that sprang to mind when I was writing this post!):

(Answers at the end – after the Portuguese version)keep-calm-and-bobs-your-uncle-5

  1. I got a biro for a fiver!
  2. I had my hoover fixed for a tenner!
  3. Just add a bit of milk to the mixture and Bob’s your uncle!
  4. I’m off to The Smoke.
  5. I might have a little kip.

Answers / Respostas:

1 – Biro = pen (caneta); fiver = five pounds (5 libras)

2 – hoover = vacuum cleaner (aspirador de po); tenner = ten pounds (10 libras)

3 – Bob’s your uncle = there you go / it’s all sorted  (nao acho equivalente em portugues. Alguns usam a expressao em frances “et voila”) **You can also say Robert’s your father’s brother**

4 – The Smoke (or The Big Smoke) = London (Londres)

5 – a kip = a nap (cochilo)

Hope this post is useful / Espero que esse post seja util 😉

Cheers!
