English Version:

If you live in the UK (as an expat like me) you must have heard of or even taken part in a Bonfire Night. But what does the 5th of November represent anyway? Why do we celebrate it with bonfires and fireworks? Who was Guy Fawkes?

It all started in 1605 when a group of Catholics called “the plotters” decided to kill King James I (who was King James VI in Scotland), who was a Protestant (Church of England) so as to replace him with a Catholic head of state.

Guy Fawkes and the other plotters put explosives beneath the House of Lords and Fawkes was responsible to guard them. After an anonymous letter had been received, the House of Lords was thoroughly searched and Guy Fawkes was arrested and taken to the Tower of London.

King James survived this attempt and in order to celebrate it, people lit bonfires around London.

Today we celebrate Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night or Guy Fawkes Night where people usually lit bonfires and or have Fireworks displays.
